Searching for an article online is like going on a blind date. Creative Content Writing is what makes your date perfect.

Bear with me for a minute as I explain. Picture your living room on a Saturday night. You’re lonely, wishing you had a companion who was the perfect fit for you. You call a friend and lament your depression and they go hey! I know the perfect girl for you and set you up on a blind date. When the moment arrives, you head to the planned hotel with light trepidation, dressed up in your best suit in the hope that the girl you meet will be the one.

Now think about searching for an article online, for a moment. No one really goes online to read randomly anymore, they hit up Google only when they need something specific. When you’re in dire need for information, you turn to Google (the friend) who says don’t worry, here are a list of possibilities, and you click on the first article (the blind date) hoping it is the solution you were looking for. Do you now see the genius of my analogy?

As a writer, how do you make sure your article is the perfect fit for your reader? How can you make your article the best damn blind date your reader has ever had? Just as in dating, there is no magic formula to conjure attraction, but by following a few simple steps you can make sure your article is intriguing and captivates your reader to follow every word till the end. You might want to bookmark this page because trust me when I say, you will use these tips every single day.

Notice how I have been able to keep you glued to my article so far? Even if good information is presented in a boring way, 90% of your readers will not read more than 20% of your content, far less will share and like.

Your article’s heading is its face. No one gives an ugly face a second glance (seems rude but it is true). I bet most of you are still reading this paragraph in the hopes of earning a billion dollars. That is exactly what a heading should do, intrigue the reader enough to want to click and read your article. Your headline has to be short, but power-packed. Do not lie about what your content has to offer, that will be counterproductive. Placing click baits may get you a click but once the reader realizes they were conned, they are never coming back. Don’t make it dull and definitely do not reveal too much. Keep them guessing and use words that scream ‘you need this article in your life’.

Instead of ‘Tips to Writing a Better Article’ say ‘These Steps Are All You Need to Write the Most Engaging Article’. If your heading can convince the reader all I need is in here (without necessarily using those words,) you are sure to get a click.

Pick a Niche

We all have that one friend who claims to know everything under the sun. He’s a biker even though all he rides is his grandpa’s 50cc scooter, a hiker because the road leading to his house is steep and a photographer because he takes regular selfies on his outdated VGA camera. He boasts about anything and has an opinion on everything, but his words are not one we respect or take seriously because he never adds value to any conversation, just lashes information that is out of context.

This is exactly what a vague article without a niche feels like. Having a niche simply means being specific to a topic you specialize in. Your article’s heading might grab immediate attention and SEO optimization might get your article a click but keeping your reader on your page is a matter of having well worded, unique and eloquent content that stays specific to its title and purpose.

TechCrunch was a website launched in 2005 and their primary focus was delivering technology industry news. Guess what their company goal is today, 11 years later? It’s exactly the same. By sticking to a field they have expertise in, they have managed to build a business that ropes in $2.4 million annually.

This concept can be applied to a single article as well. If your heading says ‘Features of a GoPro’ and your article goes on to talk about photography in general, you can be sure to lose readers. While you think you’re on point writing about photography in general because GoPro is a camera, the visitor to your site probably came to find core features about the product (believing your heading) but received nothing of value.

Be sure to do your research and be a hundred percent sure of your facts before publishing. Confirm your article is precisely what the heading promises it to be and fill it with content that is rich and specific to its niche.

 

Be Concise and use Power Words

Don’t make your sentences unnecessarily long and sloppy. No one really has the time or patience anymore. Deliver your message with as few words as possible. I do not mean cut short your sentences at the expense of simplicity and meaning, no sir. If you need more words to put forward a point, it is perfectly alright. But if you can tell the same sentence with fewer words and keep its meaning intact, then you must. I can say “use your mastery of the English language to eliminate words that regurgitate, to trim your message down to a visually pleasing length”, or, I can simply say “be concise”. I rest my case.

Use tools like Hemingway Editor and Grammarly to ensure that your content is perfect for the online readers.

Since you’re using fewer words, your words need to pack a power punch. Use meaningful and strong synonyms of everyday words to keep your article smart. Something as simple as saying ‘extreme’ instead of ‘too much’, ‘grieving’ instead of ‘sad’ or ‘ecstatic’ instead of ‘happy’ will add more depth to your article. Don’t go overboard, adding complicated multi-syllabled words that no one can understand will work against you. There’s a fine line between sounding smart and sounding vainly stupid. Understand where that line is.

 

Use Large Fonts to Deliver a Message

You absolutely must intersperse your article with short messages that are written in large fonts, especially if your article is very long.

You see my point? Fifty percent of your viewers will first glance through your article to read the highlights and see if it is what they need. In such cases, sentences that stand out are more likely to be read. Type key points in large, flashy font, and spread them across your article. When the reader realizes your article is the best one on the internet, they’ll scroll back up and read it from the start, word to word.

 

Don’t Always just Make a List, Tell a Story

The article you are writing may be about ’10 ways to look prettier’, but that doesn’t mean you should type all ten points one after the other like a grocery list and end your article. I mean, you can, but you might as well throw it in the recycle bin because no one’s ever going to read it completely.

Give your audience an experience, like the one I have given you so far (don’t you dare roll your eyes). Even though you are only looking to give them tips, take them through a journey, walk them through the transformation from looking regular to looking pretty, tell them how each point made you more attractive, give them examples of how you or your friends actually used the pointers you are giving, throw in an anecdote to tickle their funny bone, MAKE YOUR ARTICLE FLOW LIKE A STORY.

Even an article that is aimed at giving bullet point information can be made a suspense story. For example, you’re still reading to find where the billion dollar tip is, aren’t you?

 

Talk to your Audience in Person

I’m going to leave you with this final tip that is guaranteed to keep your readers happy. But first, let me tell you a secret. I didn’t write this article for myself, I didn’t write it for the world, not for the money or to cure boredom on a Saturday night. I wrote it for YOU. Yes you, my dear reader. I spent hours scouring the internet, staying up late and burning candles I cannot afford only to choreograph the perfect article for you.
